Review
The relationship between youth and the media is one of the most frequented areas in media and cultural studies, but rarely has it been so judiciously, thoroughly, and productively examined as it is in Andy Ruddock's excellent and most useful book.
Professor Graeme Turner
The University of Queensland

'In addition to the provision of a new slant on media power and youth to the existing wealth of studies of media and the young Ruddock achieves a genuinely absorbing scholarly read. By using thought-provoking pertinent case studies underpinned clearly with wider questions posed by sociologists and those working in cultural and media studies before highlighting why this is important, he achieves with enthusiasm and skill what many other scholars fail to do. Ruddock achieves the unusual in that he has written a research text that is also useful and accessible teaching tool for undergraduates and even postgraduates. He structures his book through an accessible process of asking a question, establishing why it is interesting, what has been written in the area, providing an insightful case study, and deliberating what can be said on the basis of evidence before considering what this contributes to understanding media influence. It could easily be used to help dissertation students struggling with creating a structured research piece from an interesting idea they have had. [...] It is a study of the here and now that will still offer insight when the cases have passed from immediate memory.' (Ruth Penfold-Mounce 2013-06-25)

"This volume attempts to study youth and media beyond a myopic media effects paradigm that problematizes use as antisocial and deviant....Ruddock pleads for the study of youth and media beyond "something that is bad" and provides several points of departure to move beyond this perspective. Summing Up: Recommended." (N.D. Bowman CHOICE 2013-10-01)

Using a series of case studies running the gamut from Kony 2012 to the life and times of Jackass star Bam Margera, Ruddock discusses how and why youth media studies matter, how it should be studied, and what we can learn from the findings. The book covers the influence and effect of media on youth in several contexts; in addition to the examples already mentioned, he covers the Ryan Florence and David Cameron incident, Insane Clown Posse and censorship, the Columbine high school shootings, child soldiers, and much more. The book does provide a good introductory discussion of a variety of key topics in the study of youth and the media, and does an excellent job of revealing the complexity of the relationship between youth and the media.

Throughout his ten chapters Ruddock frames his discussion in a recurring cyclical figure that flows in the following cycle: Research Question, Underlying issue about media influence, Relevant literature, Exemplifying case study, Outcomes, and Lesson for understanding media influence. This consistency in presentation is a strength of the book, adding some structure to a large and varied subject matter. This is a particularly good structure for students, Ruddock’s intended audience...Youth and Media is a good introductory text on the subject and students of media, sociology and violence will find it an excellent place to start. (LSE Review of Books 2013-10-17)

I did not really want to read this book it just seemed to be the lesser of evils when it came to this months prime picks. The beginning did not encourage me much as it was a little on the depressing side. When Jaya escapes to India to escape her pain of multiple miscarriages the story starts to get interesting - and I ended up staying up all night reading it. Jaya begins to hear a story about her grandmother, Amisha, and it helps her to understand her own mother and in the end she learns to take another perspective when looking at her own life. This was a fantastic read. I cried and I never cry. Your heart goes out to Amisha's situation and the way it works out. Aside from the grandmothers story you also see a heartbreaking look at the poor side of India and how some of their traditions have hurt them. The caste system still is there is the more rural places which is where this story takes place. The description of the orphanage Jaya goes to is heartrending and makes you want to go to India and change things. The story makes so many of the things we have heard of come to life -things we have never been acquainted with. The rest of the story of Amisha's life is something that you will have to read for yourself and I guarantee you will love her story.

I will begin my review at the end of the story. Usually, when I enjoy a book, I don't want the story to end. I was comfortable letting this story end. Not because I disliked it. But, because the author did such a terrific job of tying up all of the loose ends. This book was a very emotional experience. Almost exhausting. I just could not stop reading. This explains why, as much as I enjoyed reading this book, I was content with it ending. It was beautifully written. I felt as if I'd been transported to India. In my mind, I could vividly picture the characters, the settings, the time period. I hurt when the characters hurt and was jubilant when the characters were happy or celebrating joyous events. Would I read another novel by this author? I am afraid not. I am emotionally spent. I am way too empathetic. But, the author did her job; she drew me into the story. She also enlightened me as far as the history of India. Great read!

I thought this was a terribly written book. It was a Kindle First selection so at least I didn't pay for it. It was a story that has been told over and over - forbidden love and resulting pregnancy. The facts relating to Indian life in India feel more like the author awkwardly showing, "Look! I did research!" more than part of the story. On the other hand, details that were included, such as the homemade toothbrush the servant was sure the main character would like, were never mentioned again. WELL DID SHE LIKE FINALLY TRY IT? Other daily trials of living in poverty in modern day India were left out; how about going into as much detail about toilet facilities in the family home as taking a shower? Now THAT would have been culture shock coming from modern-day America. And then other things - traditional Indian women wore petticoats in the time of WWII? There's an American hospital that specializes in polio treatment in modern times, when polio has long been eradicated in the US? - don't ring true. I mourn the loss of book editors. Being able to self-publish has ruined reading for me. I guess I should stick to the classics.

I'm not a professional reviewer and rarely write reviews but this book just took me away to a different culture and to lives that loved and lost so much. The writing is beautiful and captivating. With every page turned, I wanted a new page. We take so much for granted in the US that we often forget how difficult life was and is in many other lands. The heartbreak, the passion and love is universal and the author conveys this while the actual story is set in a different time in India where women were no more than servants, yet those same women as in Amisha had hopes and dreams. Beautifully written in such a way that I was saddened when I read the last word.

EDITED at suggestion of a comments by James Crain and Kindle Reader Kit, below.Last month the Amazon First books, and the short stories, all seemed to resonate with me. This month, only two stories provided any glimmer of interest for me. Then, a review of one of the two dissuaded me from reading that one. So, I took a chance on "The Storyteller’s Secret,” even though it sounded a bit too common. Would I be inspired? Would I be letdown? Is this story merely a good read, or is it something more?Read on to learn what I found…POV: Starts out in first person, but then shifts to third person.THE WRITING: Frankly, the first three or four chapters were, well, sensitively written, but not particularly interesting for me. Essentially, they were written to show why our heroine travels to India. Parts were gripping, but other parts felt as if the author was trickling information instead of painting a picture. Yeah, it was a bit like my writing, so I shan’t be too critical. By Chapter 6, when we travel back in time to the 1930’s, the POV changes to third person and becomes much more engaging.I don’t want to give any spoilers, but I did feel relieved to begin reading of Grandfather Deepak and Amisha. Suffice it to say that I lived in Egypt for a number of years and fell in love with an Egyptian lady and we married in 2002. To this day, I still tend to not fully fathom the society my wife was raised in. Even so, I am able to get a glimpse of the different views of Indian society and its strict adherence to their customs. If readers keep this in mind while reading “The Storyteller’s Secret,” it may help them navigate the nuances hinted at.It is important to note that journalists, (of small newspapers and large) are always reminded to keep their opinions out of the stories they write, because it is important for readers to see what is happening so they can arrive at their own conclusions. I found this easy, usually, as did the protagonist in this tale of woe, which became an epiphany for her upon learning the sordid details of her grandmother. Saying such is not a spoiler, as without some sort of story arc, there would be no reason to relay such a tale of fiction that almost could be true.BLUSH FACTOR: As for language and sex, no worries here.ADVENTURE: To explore the fictional tale of a family history in a foreign land (India) is an adventure of sorts, but this is not an adventure on the scale of, say, Emerald Forest. This adventure is more of one from one society to another. Rather than refer to this tale as a story of adventure, it is more a quest for discovery.SOUL: Yes, this has soul. When you can read the plight of someone raised in a society with vastly different customs, and the strict adherence by most to those customs, and still feel empathy for them, that is a story with soul. To some extent, I suppose, my view of Indians of Asian descent was enhanced because of this story. Not to an earthshaking extent, but I am moved.EXCERPTIn this excerpt you will likely deduce that Amisha is a strong-willed Indian woman heavily influenced by the teachings of Mahatma Ghandhi, which some revered as revolutionary seeking more than mere independence from Britain, but independence from the shackles of custom. Amisha would pay the price for her convictions, but that is getting ahead of the story…‘…Amisha remembered Chara’s order to find a servant she could trust. Because Ravi did not live in her village, he would not be part of the crowd whose loyalty would be to Chara first. She gnawed on her lip as her palms started to sweat and her heart fluttered. Even as the plan hatched, she feared she was inviting Chara’s wrath.“You would work anywhere?”“Who are you?” Frustration laced his words. He kept glancing around them. Amisha knew he was afraid of being beaten. She had seen it before when an untouchable spoke to a woman of a higher caste.“I am the daughter-in-law of the mill’s owner,” Amisha replied quickly. She said it without pride since her position in society mattered little to her. At the widening of his eyes, she added, “Work for me.” If she waited any longer, she feared talking herself out of it.“It is cruel for you to joke.” Ravi turned away, barely masking his disgust.“I am not laughing, and neither should you be.” The man’s desire to be more than what was allowed struck a chord deep within her, and Amisha couldn’t imagine a better comrade for herself. “Take the offer or don’t. Just decide quickly so I know to look elsewhere.”“I am an untouchable.” Ravi hit the dirt with his bare foot and glanced away in shame. “It is important for you to know.”“I am a woman.” Her reality always a looming shadow, she glanced at the sun. “We have now established our roles.”“You are the mill owner’s daughter,” Ravi argued. “My parents and siblings are also vagrants. Begging is our destiny.” Furious, he paused before muttering, “No matter how hard I try to change it.”“Daughter-in-law,” Amisha corrected. “Both of our circumstances dictate how we live.” When his gaze met hers, she refused to look away. “My mother-in-law treats me no better than a servant.”“Is it acceptable for me to be a servant in your home?” Ravi seemed to accept that he couldn’t win the war of semantics with her.Unwilling to admit the truth, Amisha deflected. “I should tell you the story of a handsome singer.”“I would prefer you didn’t,” Ravi returned. She ignored him. “This singer wanted…’Badani, Sejal. The Storyteller's Secret: A Novel (pp. 60-61). Lake Union Publishing. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINEA story of this richness and contrast might make for an interesting 90 minutes entertainment on TV. If the producers and directors can show the story without straying too far from the writer’s depiction, it might be a big hit on HBO or Showtime. I doubt that it would fare well on Hallmark Channel. At any rate, although the writing is not one of those 'life-changing' books, it is a good read by a talented writer of Indian descent. I definitely will be reading more of her books.Four stars out of five.I am writing a book for aspiring reviewers and for product suppliers seeking reviews in an effort to help improve the process and to understand the value of Amazon’s Customer Review process. My son took his ISEE test a few months back. He did really well and got in his first choice high school. He mainly used this book to prepare. His comment was: the level of this book is very similar to the real test, the book also covers many aspects that appeared in the test. I initially bought the book after reading reviews here. The book didn’t disappoint me. It includes more questions than other similar prep books, well designed, easy to use, and really targeted for ISEE test. Highly recommend it! This is the go-to book for upper ISEE.

I am a tutor. This book has lots of good sample questions. The only thing lacking is much actually teaching of basic skills which middle school students might not have studied yet. My student doesn't know algebra yet. It would also be good to have a quick review of each topic to explain why an answer is correct or incorrect.

I hesitated to buy a book I wasn't sure would get used. But it's been worth every penny.Gratefully we found a neighborhood tutor to help my daughter study, she already had the book which reassures me it was a good purchase if a tutor as it AND now they can now use it together. If you're wavering like I was, go for it.

Well organized and great for tutoring

This book really helped my son prepare for the test! Just the sheer number of practice questions is a great reason to get it... but the questions are also super similar to those on the test (according to my son)! Highly recommend.

Excellent resource!

Buy the Kaplan. Answers with no explanation. Not broken up - you need to jump around to practice. Just using Kaplan, you see the difference.

As a standardized test tutor, I am constantly looking for materials to align with a clear and effective curriculum. This Upper Level ISEE book has been a fantastic resource for me and my students. Broken up by concept, the book provides hundreds of practice questions to clarify and solidify the key concepts of the ISEE. The questions and passages are on par with those written by the actual test writers, and the answer explanations thoroughly break down the possible choices. Additionally, there are two practice tests, so the concepts learned can be applied within a greater context. Have been very happy with this book, and excited to have it up to date for the upcoming test season.

Review

"Here is an original new voice, with a deep and lovely grasp of language and story. Hannah Kent's first novel, BURIAL RITES, is an accomplished gem, its prose as crisp and sparkling as its northern setting."―Geraldine Brooks, winner of the Pulitzer Prize"A compelling read, heart-breaking and uplifting in equal measure."―Anne Berry, author of The Hungry Ghosts"Hannah Kent's gorgeous and haunting BURIAL RITES will touch your heart."―Charlotte Rogan, author of The Lifeboat"So gripping I wanted to rush through the pages, but so beautifully written I wanted to linger over every sentence. Hannah Kent's debut novel is outstanding."―Madeline Miller, author of The Song of Achilles"Hannah Kent's BURIAL RITES shows how a seemingly simple tale-a murder, a family, a remote landscape-can prove mythic in scale in the right hands. Spell-binding and moving, it's the kind of novel that gets under your skin, moves your blood, your heart. A bravura debut."―Megan Abbott, author of Dare Me"A magical exercise in artful literary fiction.... With language flickering, sparkling and flashing like the northern lights.... Beautiful are Kent's descriptions of the interminable summer light, the ever-present snow and ice and cold of winter's gloomy darkness, the mountains, sea and valleys where sustenance is blood-rung from sheep."―Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)"Delves deep into Scandinavian history, not to mention matters of storytelling, guilt, and silence.... Kent smoothly incorporates her impressive research...while giving life to these historical figures and suspense to their tales."―Publishers Weekly"Rarely has a country's starkness and extreme weather been rendered so exquisitely. The harshness of the landscape and the lifestyle of nineteenth-century Iceland, with its dank turf houses and meager food supply, is as finely detailed as the heartbreak and tragedy of Agnes' life.... [A]haunting reading from a bright new talent."―Joanne Wilkinson, Booklist (Starred Review)"In the company of works by Hilary Mantel, Susan Vreeland, and Rose Tremain, this compulsively readable novel entertains while illuminating a significant but little-known true story. Highly recommended."―Barbara Love, Library Journal (Starred Review)"Deeply emotional [and] gripping.... A cross between the grim, moorish atmosphere of Wuthering Heights and the cold, religiously-infested repression of a Bergman film, Kent's novel emerges alive, triumphant and sublimely poetic."―Shelf Awareness

This is a dark book. With an even darker ending. But that's not a spoiler because this extraordinary tale by Hannah Kent (published in 2010 when she was only 25 years old!) is based on actual historical events. While it is a novel, the author's prodigious research gives the story authenticity.Taking place in Iceland in 1828, "Burial Rites" is a (partially) fictionalized account of the life and death of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, a young woman found guilty of the murder of her lover. While she awaits her execution, she is housed in the remote country home of a low-level government official, his wife and two grown daughters. She chooses a young and inexperienced priest named Tóti to counsel her. The family is frightened to accommodate the prisoner, but something happens over the months that Agnes lives with them. She talks. Tóti listens. The family listens. Is Agnes really guilty of this horrific, bloody crime? While the murder may be the tantalizing centerpiece of the story, the descriptions of the north of Iceland are so vivid, the reader can almost feel the brutal cold, see the snow and hear the howling winds. Like I did, you may find yourself looking online for photos of a badstofa, turf homes and the barren winter landscape of north Iceland. This isn't a light beach book. It is by turns disturbing, alarming and sorrowful with no humor to lighten the woeful tale. But it is an incredible book that will give you an appreciation for this time and place and the most basic of human emotions that transcend both.

There has been a great deal of publicity surrounding this book, the meticulously researched fictionalised account of the events leading up to the execution of Agnes Magnusdottir - the last woman to be executed in Iceland and so I began the book with high expectations. They were surpassed. From the first page I was transported to a different place and time and I became oblivious to everything around me. ended up staying up nearly all night to finish this book not because it is full of suspense but because I was "there" with the characters and did not want to / in fact could not leave them. The writing is beautiful, the research fantastic. - I am recommending it to all my family and friends.

Based on the tragic and harrowing story of Agnes Magnusdottir the last woman executed in Iceland in the early 1800's. It's a deeply moving account of Agnes a workmaid, and her two co-accused who were sentenced to death for the brutal murder of two men. One her lover and master.Awaiting her execution, Agnes is sent to the small and isolated holding of Jon Jonsson a District Officer and his family to await her execution. Spiritual salvation is delivered by the young and untried Assistant Reverent Toti who is appointed by the court after Agnes requests his services. During her time with Toti, Agnes tells of her life leading up to the murder through a series of flashbacks.Agnes herself comes alive as a compelling character and has a quiet dignity. Abandoned by her mother and fostered out to various families until she becomes an almost nomadic servant who travels from each isolated holding looking to make ends meet. It is a grim and gritty existence. Agnes wants to be loved and falls into the mistaken belief that the love she felt for the murdered Natan will be returned. It took me some time to sort out the characters and familiarize myself with the names, but once that was established it was very easy to fall into this mesmerising and evocative story. The writing style is almost lyrical and a picture of Iceland, the judical system and living conditions are vividly brought to life on the page. A time steeped in paganism, premonitions, dreams, sagas and a struggle to survive. It's an emotionally draining and compelling novel, that has a very genuine feel for time and place. The claustrophic and dirt packed squalor of the crofts, the isolation and characters allow the reader to glimpse a time past.A beautifully rendered and powerful story, lovingly delivered on the page.

This book touched me deeply. My father was born in 1920 in a sod house in the north of Iceland. He was descended from Snorri Sturleson, who wrote many sagas, but he was also the illegitimate son of a Scottish/Australian father who abandoned his mother in Copenhagen. In despair, she went back to her family's sheep farm.As a child growing up in California, I would ask my father to tell me about his childhood. He would just say that he was never a child. For the first time in my life I can understand what his life must have been like and why he never wanted to go back to Iceland. When he was 5 years old, he rode his horse one full day to the nearest doctor to get his tonsils out, then rode back the next day. He spent several years in a tuberculosis asylum. He didn't see a car until he was 12. A year before he died, he told me that at age 12 he was sent to work on another farm where the farmer often beat him. Miraculously at age 20, he got a scholarship to John Hopkins University. He was supposed to go back to Iceland after graduation, but went the opposite direction to California instead.Looking at Iceland now, it's hard to remember its impoverished past.Thank you Hannah Kent for all the research and care you put into this book! It's right up there with Nobel laureates Sigrid Undset and Halldór Laxness. I'm looking forward to many more of your books!

From Publishers Weekly
How could 28-year-old rogue trader Nicholas Leeson have brought down Britain's oldest investment firm, Barings Bank, the blue-blooded merchant bank that financed the Louisiana Purchase and the British Empire's expansion? Sent from London to a back-office job in Singapore in 1992, inexperienced, cocky Leeson soon became chief trader for the subsidiary, Baring Futures. While apparently earning superprofits betting on "derivatives," futures contracts pegged to fluctuations of Japan's stock exchange, he was actually, according to Rawnsley, racking up huge losses and concealing his unauthorized trading activities in a mislabeled account. By the time top management discovered his reckless bets, his losses had reached #827 million. Leeson, now in a German prison pending extradition to Singapore, was the catalyst for a disaster waiting to happen, declares Rawnsley, a Hong Kong-based journalist and former research analyst for Barings Securities (Japan) Ltd. She blames Barings's downfall on lax management, incompetence and inadequate oversight, all of which caused bank managers to ignore numerous warning signals regarding Leeson's speculation. This stunning cautionary tale tells the inside story of one of the most spectacular debacles in modern financial history. Photos.

From Library Journal
For over 200 years Barings Bank was one of the leading financial institutions in England. In 1803 it was instrumental in financing the Louisiana Purchase, and during the 19th century its financial clout was felt throughout the British Empire. But early in 1995 this preeminent London-based firm was brought down by one man: Nicholas Leeson. How and why it happened is chronicled by Rawnsley, herself a former employee of Barings. Leeson, depicted as overly ambitious, emerged from the back office and was posted to Singapore, where he quickly became involved in trading. According to Rawnsley, Leeson "lived for the limelight of the trading floor." Leeson was so good at winning that he quickly became a star trader. But he made mistakes and tried covering them up, continuing to lose even more money. It was just a matter of time before it all came crashing down. Leeson was the catalyst for the debacle, but Rawnsley also points a finger at Barings management for a faulty risk management system and for fostering an environment where "rogue traders" were allowed to wreak havoc. An entertaining and topical book recommended for all nonfiction collections.?Richard Drezen, Washington Post News Research Ctr., Washington, D.C.

From Booklist
No one but an insider, or at least someone who had been employed at a managerial level, could comprehend how a 28-year-old trader bankrupted a venerated British financial institution. Rawnsley, a former Far East financial correspondent and one-time employee of Barings, brings a unique perspective to her task of unraveling the whodunit. After tracing the history of the bank, updating us on the 1980s and 1990s cast of characters, and probing the psychological mind-sets of traders (Nick Leeson, in particular), the blame, she concludes, lay with no one specifically and everyone in general. Although not necessarily a Jekyll-Hyde personality, Leeson was almost encouraged to commit fraudulent activities as both a trader and the backroom settlement manager, a conflict of interest and an egregious error. So, too, was management's ignoring of a warning by external auditors, the Bank of England's lack of financial regulatory clout, and so on. Only Leeson's trial will uncover more of the actual details. Not easy reading but a fascinating account. Barbara Jacobs

From Library Journal The Owens Valley communities of eastern California and their battles with the city of Los Angeles concerning water rights is a classic example of territorial conflicts. Walton presents a historical and sociological study of this largely unsuccessful battle in a community in which violence, rebellion, political activity, and state domination have been a fact of life since 1920. Walton guides the reader through conquest of Native Americans in the Owens Valley, the building of a pioneer economy, conflicts among ethnic groups and social classes, and the struggle to regain their lost dignity through collective action. His analysis shows how the expansion of a state's administrative and coercive power can undermine the autonomy of a local community by placing it in the hands of politicians, bureaucracies, and those with privileged access to state agencies. This book should be required reading for small communities involved in turf wars with nearby urban areas.- Irwin Weintraub, Rutgers Univ. Libs., Piscataway, N.J.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "One of the most provocative and rewarding recent works about social movements and collective action in the United States. . . . A fascinating story of the American West; "Western Times and Water Wars deserves high praise."--David Plotke, "Contemporary Sociology

From the Inside Flap "Walton first uses his magnifying glass to capture images of struggle in a California valley during a century and a half of transformation, then inverts it to scrutinize the American state, popular politics, and collective action in general. The maneuver is bold, the outcome stimulating."—Charles Tilly, New School for Social Research"A passionate and first rate historical adventure. The plot is as intricate, fascinating, and full of intrigue and detail as a Dickens or a Tolstoy novel."—John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War
